The words of 'Land of Hope and Glory' and the tune from Elgar's Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1 are extremely well known. But few people will be aware that a Liverpool cotton merchant, Alfred Rodewald, was one of the dedicatees of that famous march. Indeed, Elgar is known to have called Rodewald his 'best friend'. The co-dedicatee was the Liverpool Orchestral Society, an amateur orchestra founded and conducted by Rodewald and brought to such a high standard that even hardened professionals were happy to play in it. Rodewald was revered in Liverpool for his enthusiastic championship of what he called 'real music', and with his orchestra, and by his lectures and writings, devoted his energies, his money, and perhaps his life to that cause. Rodewald came to know Elgar late in life, and the two men struck up a remarkable and close friendship, Rodewald meeting Elgar's need for support and reassurance at a critical time in his composing career. Elgar was devastated when Rodewald died suddenly. This book reveals the story of the two men's relationship, as well as a great deal of fascinating background information about musical life in Liverpool and elsewhere at the end of the nineteenth century. Here is a biographical kaleidoscope for historians, and anyone interested in English music, especially Elgarians.
