The book mapped out here is intended to introduce students and other readers to the geochemistry of the outer layers of the earth. These layers include the atmosphere, the oceans and their mid ocean ridges, the zone of weathering, erosion and sedimentation on continents, as well as continental surface waters and shallow and deep groundwater. Sedimentary rocks (and their waters) on continental surfaces and ocean floors will also be included up to the point that they become impermeable and thus entirely isolated from the earth's surface. The biosphere will naturally be an integral part of the geochemical realm covered in the book. The book will adopt a holistic geochemical approach, including inorganic and organic processes, cycles and products. It will also include elements, isotopes, minerals, molecules, solutions, complexes, etc. This approach is a departure from traditional geochemistry texts which tend to focus on high temperature topics (eg metamorphism, thermodynamics, etc). It is a response to recent rapid changes in earth science curricula, which have seen low temperature geochemistry rise to the fore in may departments, and indeed become the only geochemistry course offered.
