The book examines the architectural decoration of the antique city of Milet in Asia Minor from approx. 30 BC to 140 AD.It takes account of all the ornamented building elements of this period, the remains of buildings which could be reconstructed in their entirety as well as individual finds. The first part of the book serves to present the material, much of it previously unpublished. Here, Koester proposes dating for the various complexes based on an analysis of their ornamentation, using the few monuments which can be dated by extra-stylistic criteria as a framework.Using this as a basis, he then places the building and individual finds in an historical and developmental context. The second part of the book provides a short survey of the development of architectural ornamentation in Asia Minor and draws the various elements together to throw light on the characteristics of architectural ornamentation in Milet and the stonemasons and architects working there. The text is complemented by an extended collection of plates.
