Niger, a vast and arid state on the edge of the Sahara desert, is one of the poorest countries on our planet. Its infant mortality rate is the second highest in the world and even when the harvests are good, a shocking 40 per cent of Niger's children -- over a million -- suffer from chronic malnutrition. The Al Madad Foundation and UNICEF have joined together to fund a water and sanitation project in Niger and under their joint auspices, a team of photographers spent a month travelling around the country recording what they found there. As with two other books of pictorial reportage by the Foundation (Silent witneses: the lives of Palestine's children and Kashmir's children: the silent witnesses of the earthquake), this latest volume follows the same format: a portfolio of over 150 photographs, alongside reproductions of the children's artwork.
