For those, like me, who live to eat, it’s pretty mind-bending to think of how many people in the world still eat to live. – Yotam Ottolenghi
The war in Syria is the worst humanitarian crisis the world has faced since the Second World War, leaving people starving and displaced, with children amongst the worst affected.
Originally launched as a nation-wide fundraising initiative in November to raise money for UNICEF’s Syria Relief fund, #CookForSyria was the brainchild of Instagram star and Clerkenwell Boy and Serena Guen founder of Suitcase Magazine and Unicef UK’s ambassador for Next Generation London.
Horrified by the continuing plight of civilians caught in the ongoing atrocities of the Syrian conflict, the pair decided to host a charity banquet to raise funds. What started out as a modest fundraising initiative quickly gathered momentum, with a host of celebrity chefs taking part and this motivated the organisers to think of expanding their appeal and the #CookforSyria website was born; inspiring people around the country to contribute their own Syrian inspired recipes as well as donate and host their own Syrian charity meal at home.
Now the Cook for Syria book collects together the best of those recipes from a host of famous and award-winning chefs including: Yotam Ottolenghi, Amelia Freer, Angela Hartnett, Anna Jones, Bruno Loubet, Chetna Makan, Ed Smith, Ella Mills (Deliciously Ella), Elly Curshen, Fergus Henderson, Georgina Hayden, Gizzi Erskine, Hemsley+Hemsley, Jack Monroe, Jamie Oliver, John Whaite, José Pizarro, Kylee Newton, Lily Vanilli, Martin Morales, Nuno Mendes, Olia Hercules, Oliver Rowe, Rosie Birkett, Sami Tamimi, Selin Kiazim, Skye Gyngell, Sophie Michell, Thomasina Miers and more!
The hope is that this book will inspire everyone to create their own Syrian and Middle Eastern banquets and help Syrian children along the way. With mouth-watering recipes including Olive Oil and Pistachio Cake with Yoghurt Sorbet, the best Baba Ganoush and aromatic Aubergine Fetteh accompanied by over a hundred lavish photographs – all freely donated - these are recipes to savour, enjoy and share. They are also recipes to change lives for the better.
‘I feel incredibly honoured to participate in this charity campaign. We strongly believe in the cause and it is always a challenge as a chef to pull yourself out of your comfort zone and create something new.’ - Nuno Mendes, executive chef of award winning restaurant Chiltern Firehouse
‘It's a joy to unite with my food heroes and be part of this incredible collection of recipes inspired by love for Syria and the Syrian people.’ - Melissa Hemsley, (Hemsley+Hemsley)
