Students taking their first chemical engineering course plunge into the 'nuts and bolts' of mass and energy balances and often miss the broad view of what chemical engineers do. This 1998 text offers a well-paced introduction to chemical engineering. Students are first introduced to the fundamental steps in design and three methods of analysis: mathematical modeling, graphical methods, and dimensional analysis. The book then describes how to apply engineering skills, such as how to simplify calculations through assumptions and approximations; how to verify calculations, significant figures, spreadsheets, graphing (standard, semi-log and log-log); and how to use data maps. In addition, the book teaches engineering skills through the design and analysis of chemical processes and process units in order to assess product quality, economics, safety, and environmental impact. This text will help undergraduate students in chemical engineering develop engineering skills early in their studies. Lecturer's solution manual available from the publisher on request.

MEDIA REVIEWS
'The style and presentation of this textbook represents a convincingly refreshing approach to teaching fundamental concepts of chemical engineering to undergraduates. With the current popular trend of industrial production engaged firmly in novel materials and biotechnology, there is now an undeniable need for chemical engineering students to be introduced to batch processing, multiple steady-state and cyclic processing applications at a very early stage. The authors' introduction of these highly relevant concepts is both informative and thorough; far superior to any material I have come across in other entry level undergraduate textbooks.' Ugur Tuzun, Chemistry in Britain

"This innovative text offers a well-paced introduction to chemical engineering. Through a series of real-world examples and extensive exercises, students learn the basic engineering concepts of design and analysis." Engineering Designer
"Will [the book] really empower students to do things by themselves? That question was beautifully answered by the great collection of end-of-chapter problems. They are as valuable as the material in the chapters, if not more...The problems are very 'contemporary': they include a number of applications of chemical engineering to the microelectronics industry, for example." Eduardo D. Glandt, University of Pennsylvania
