A number of researchers dealing with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) present current developments in the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of the condition. Epidemiological data is examined, such as the relationship of BPH to prostate cancer. Emphasis is also placed on the importance of the objective symptoms of BPH and on the evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of various imaging techniques. Although surgery is currently considered the optimal treatment, a variety of new therapeutic approaches are investigated with special attention paid to the new therapeutic class of 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors. Also discussed are quality of life issues to be considered when assessing the patient with BPH.
