Hugh Nevill compiled his collection of Sinhalese manuscripts, now in the Oriental and India Office Collections of The British Library, while working as a civil servant in Sri Lanka between 1869 and 1888. It is impressively wide-ranging, with manuscripts on a wealth of subjects, from poetry to medicine. This volume of the catalogue is a compendium of Sinhalese ritualistic poetry with descriptions of palm leaf manuscripts and summaries of 19 volumes of bound paper manuscripts, containing the texts of the two major cycles of ritualistic legends in Sri Lanka. Fully indexed, the catalogue provides access to this collection of Sinhalese material for anyone researching in the field of South Asian studies.
