This work was commissioned by London New Music and first performed by them in 1989 at the Purcell Room. Bob depicts some of the activities in a Bower of Bliss, as described by Edmund Spenser in The Faerie Queen: Thence passing forth, they shortly do arryve, Whereat the Bowre of Blisse was situate, A place pickt out by choyce of best alyve, That natures worke by art can imitate: In which what ever in this worldly state Is sweete, and pleasing unto living sense, Or that may dayntest fantasy aggrate, Was poured forth with plentifull dispence, And made there to abound with lavish affluence. Like other Barry works there are frequent changes of tempo and time signature, making it a complex work to perform.
