This is a study of the administration and government of the West African kingdom of Asante between 1744 and 1873. Larry W. Yarak analyses the nature and development of the pre-colonial state, and traces the history and character of the Asante-Dutch relationship from the early eighteenth century until the Dutch departure from the Gold Coast in 1872. Dr Yarak has carried out extensive researches in hitherto neglected Dutch archives, and made a detailed examination of important Asante oral sources. His book broadens our knowledge of the complexities of Afro-European relations on the pre-colonial Gold Coast, and contributes to wider historiographical debates concerning our understanding of African institutions. Asante and the Dutch is a substantial and original contribution to the history of a powerful imperial African state in the period before the European 'Scramble' for Africa.

MEDIA REVIEWS
` it clearly represents a major contribution to the study of this important state.' The Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History.
'Larry Yarak has published a thoroughly researched book about the relationship between the Asante, the Dutch, and the Elminans on the Gold Coast of West Africa. This is an historian's book, written for historians familiar with Gold Coast and Asante history during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The book is filled with details, but each of the six chapters has a good introduction, and most chapters have useful conclusions. In addition, Yarak often summarizes, bringing the reader back to the main point of the chapter of the book as a whole.' Harvey M. Feinberg, Southern Connecticut College, The International Journal of African Historical Studies, Volume 24, Number 3 (1991)
'Yarak brings to his study considerable Dutch archival material and in fact applies Dutch sources to analyses of the workings of the Asante administrative system more extensively than any scholar before him ... Yarak has produced an important, stimulating, and provocative work of relevance not only to Asante studies but to analyses of other traditional political institutions throughout Africa as well.' Joseph K. Adjaye, University of Pittsburgh, American Historical Review
