Readers of my autobiography In at the Deep End will have learned of my unexpected and accidental diversification from farming into broadcasting and writing. In that book I mentioned my trips abroad but skated over most of the details as I thought they would interfere with the rest of the story. But what follows is an account of some of the dozens
of countries I have visited for work and for pleasure. Taking advice from Ernest Hemingway, who said never write all that you know, I have not recounted all of my experiences but selected the highlights and in some cases the lowlights of my many trips. For the record, they have all been enjoyable, usually at the time but sometimes in retrospect. I hope you enjoy them too.
“So, you like my cattle?” asked the manager. We nodded and he said, “The feed is real good and the hormones help.” And he went on to tell us that they administered three doses of hormone to every animal during its stay in the lot. In other words, a dose every three months. In Britain we had banned even one dose per animal in case it affected the sex lives of the people who ate the beef. But we didn’t think one or two American steaks would hurt us too much and I had to admit they tasted good and juicy.”
