National concern over the prevention and control of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), surveillance on Salmonella and consumer protection from lead contamination has focused attention on the state of animal health in the UK. This report records the wide range of work carried out by the State Veterinary Service and attempts to put the emotive public issues into perspective. A record of freedom from major notifiable diseases in livestock has been maintained, surveillance methods proved successful and animal health schemes increased. There are details of these, together with information on breeding and animal welfare both on and off the farm. Chapters on consumer protection, exports and imports give a broader view of the importance of animal health at home and abroad.
