Research and development in the application of supercritical fluids for the extraction of analytes from sample matrices continues, and has reached the stage where it is the technique of choice for some applications, and offers great promise in others. For example, the US EPA has developed a number of internationally accepted protocols for the extraction of analytes using supercritical fluid methodology. Where once the main thrust of development was in the direction of on-line coupling of SFE technology to a range of chromatographic instruments, the main developments have really been in the off-line extraction of analytes. This book is a development of the previous SFE book edited by Westwood (Blackie 1993) with a change in emphasis to reflect current research and application areas. The concentration on on-line technology has been replaced by an approach reflecting use of both off-line and on-line modes.
