When professional information seekers need guidance on reference books, they usually turn to "American Reference Books Annual" (ARBA), because ARBA provides a comprehensive collection of authoritative reviews on English-language reference materials published or distributed in the United States and Canada. Since its inception in 1970, ARBA has reviewed more than 41,000 titles, on subjects ranging from AIDs and aging to higher education and taxes. The 1993 edition of ARBA continues the tradition established in previous editions, covering titles released in 1992 as well as some from 1991. Special features of this edition are the reviews of major encyclopedias, such as "World Book Encyclopedia" (World Book, 1992) and "Encyclopedia Americana" (Grolier, 1992) and the introduction of CD-ROM reviews. This year's edition surveys such titles as "The New Palgrave Dictionary of Money and Finance" (Stockton Press, 1992), "Academic Press Dictionary of Science and Technology" (Academic Press, 1992), "The Bloomsbury Guide to Women's Literature" (Prentice Hall, 1992) and "Encyclopedia of Sociology" (Macmillan, 1992) - 1,792 titles in all. Organisation follows that of previous editions. Divided into four general sections ("General Reference Works", "Social Sciences", "Humanities", and "Science and Technology"), the chapters are arranged alphabetically by subject. Within the chapters, reviews are organised according to format or subject. Reviews describe contents, scope, purpose and intended audiences of the books. Special attention is given to positive and negative aspects, quality of writing, and comparisons with similar titles. All reviews are signed. Author-title and subject indexes enable the user to locate information easily. With contributions from more than 400 subject specialists, ARBA provides guidance and valuable bibliographic data to an ever-widening audience across North America and around the world. Librarians, researchers, business-people, academic professionals, booksellers and students can use ARBA to meet their reference needs.
