This volume presents the scope and content of all Indian research materials in the Western History Collections of the University of Oklahoma, including manuscripts, photographs, sound recordings, National Archives microfilms, periodicals, and newspapers. Manuscript collections described in detail include significant unpublished sources created by American Indians; nineteenth and twentieth-century personal accounts of contact with Indians by teachers, missionaries, soldiers, scientists, and government officials; field reports of anthropologists; and business records of early white residents of Indian territory. Photograph collections described include both studio portraits of leading Indian personalities and historically important American Indian photography by L.A.Shuck, Will Soule, William S.Prettyman, and others. Especially strong for the period 1870-1910, the photographs graphically document American Indian cultures at the close of the nineteenth century. The sound-recording collections offer frequently over-looked sources for the study of American Indian music, language, folklore, religion, history, and geneology. The microfilm collections bring the richness of National Archives holdings to the researcher, and their inclusion in the guide helps researchers know what federal recordings are available for use in conjunction with the primary sources at the Western History Collections. Entries are arranged alphabetically by category for easy title access, and each contains a description of content, size, and date of collection. A detailed index allows quick, accurate reference.
