This book examines the ideological, cultural and social aspects of the fascinating relationship between Portuguese Romanticism and British Culture. Joao Baptista da Silva Leitao de Almeida Garrett (1799-1854), generally regarded as the founder of Portuguese Romanticism, represents a landmark in Anglo-Portuguese cultural interaction. The main object of this work is to demonstrate that Romanticism was introduced to Portugal via England by Garrett, whose exiles in Britain in 1823-24 and 1828-31 proved crucial to his literary and political development. This book also examines Garrett's contribution to Anglo-Portuguese cultural interaction in the first half of the nineteenth century and seeks to provide an accurate biography - especially focusing on Garret's journeys in Britain and his relations with British Lusophiles.
