"Aistriu" is the new award-winning novel from Kerry writer, Siobhan Ni Shuilleabhain, which examines a family's move from Kerry to the newly established Meath Gaeltacht in the 1930s under the rural resettlement scheme. "Aistriu" is the first novel published to explore this important area of Irish history. From the small town of Imilea in the Gaeltacht area of Corca Dhuibhne in Kerry, the author remembers hearing stories about the rural resettlement scheme when she was young. It offered the chance of a new beginning to many families living in poverty in the Gaeltacht areas of Connemara, Kerry and Donegal. Unfortunately, it also meant the splintering of communities, the breaking of bonds that had been formed over generations, and the dilution of the Irish language, and the novel explores these themes. "Aistriu" describes a time when life was simpler and when communities worked together as a unit. It depicts the alienation felt by the family as they leave their home and migrate to a new area and the sadness of the older generation who fear they will never lay eyes on their native place again. The story is told through the eyes of the child, Ceaite, adding an endearing simplicity to this lyrical and evocative novel. "Aistriu" was awarded the Clo Iar-Chonnachta Literary Prize, in conjunction with Udaras na Gaeltachta. The book should be of particular interest to those who remember the resettlement scheme, and to those from the Kerry and Rath Cairn areas described in the book.
