This conference looked at the impact of the forthcoming requirements being formulated by the Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) in parallel with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which will address the concern for the immunity of aircraft electrical and electronic systems when exposed to high intensity radiated fields (HIRF). The concern is over the growing reliance on these systems and the possibly reduced shielding afforded by the composite materials now used in advanced aircraft design. The report commences with an overview of the regulatory requirements by the Civil Aviation Authority. The papers cover: the development of airworthiness requirements, definition of the worldwide radiated field environment, the options for demonstrating compliance (with reference to the users guide under preparation), practical design considerations - modelling and analysis, equipment design protection and test procedures, the design of protection for systems, aircraft and systems test procedures and finally, post-certification issues. The speakers representing the UK and Europe came from both civil and military aviation authorities and leading manufacturers in the avionic field. A list of delegates is included. This is the first of two volumes - the other volume is under Era Technology reference number 90-0163.
