Vasilii Andreevich Sokolov's 1966 book "Gases of the Earth" is virtually unknown in the West. The book presents a fascinating summary of Russian earth sciences. Sokolov reviews the occurrence of gases in igneous and particularly sedimentary rocks. Following the lead of scientists such as Vernadsky, Oparin, Vologdin and Vinogradov, Sokolov provides a uniquely Russian perspective on the evolution of the atmosphere through geologic time. Sokolov also defines in this book an emerging Russian perspective on the consequences of accumulation of carbon dioxide as a result of burning of hydrocarbon fuels. The book describes the gases of the Earth from its initial formation (the protoplanetary nebula), through development of the biosphere and up to the present day.
