This report concentrates mainly on the use of microwave sensors in the control of industrial processes and in the medical field. It reviews the current applications and future potential of microwave imaging with particular emphasis on near-field systems. It also describes the theoretical techniques and algorithms which are available for the generation of images from raw experimental data. The techniques which are used in the microwave region 1 to 30 GHz (corresponding to a wave length range of 300 - 10mm respectively), can often be applied at lower frequencies (radio frequencies) and at higher frequencies (the millimetre wave band), therefore, systems operating from around 300 MHz (wavelength 1 m) to 100 GHz (wavelength 3 mm) are included. After an introduction to the subject, the existing applications are classified by frequency and the measurement technique used. Background principles and techniques for microwave holography, tomography and thermography are presented together with those for continuous-wave and pulse radar. Based on a detailed literature survey, the technical effectiveness of microwave imaging in various real-time applications is presented and verified. Uses in commercial industry, manufacturing and medical fields are reported on including: detection of buried and concealed objects; investigating some medical conditions; measuring distance, velocity and moisture content; measurements based on resonant cavity techniques; the three-dimensional imaging for monitoring industrial processes or for machine vision systems. Some unique capabilities not present in other current imaging techniques are highlighted. Some useful conclusions are drawn and an extensive list of over 100 references is provided.
