This novel is about the daily life of an American private investigator in Los Angeles by the name of Michael Stacey, his young lady friend Jacqueline and Mike's buddy, police detective Ken Logan. Starting a new career as a private detective Mike tries to stick to simple assignments but after skirmishes with two crime syndicates he gets involved in murder, kidnapping, blackmail, a court case and a lot of gunfights. The story is fiction and it features plenty of violence, ingenious plots and explosive action but it also has a fair mix of suspense, drama, sex and humor. Every detail in the story is original and the manuscript has never been published before. There is not one single event in the manuscript that stands out as `the plot' because every chapter deals with an almost different event and circumstance. The overall theme is similar to the popular Mike Hammer series.
As detective stories go, Mike is not a super human being who knows and does everything right without a problem. In fact, he finds himself in a number of very tight situations where the chips are down. His new career starts with a simple assignment but ends up with three murder cases. In his next assignment he wraps up a kidnapping case, meets a beautiful blonde and a hot love affair follows. Hardly able to concentrate on his work he is ambushed by the kidnapper and nearly pays with his life. Getting back on track his path crosses with a crime syndicate in his investigation for stolen goods and counterfeit money and he and Jackie become prime targets. Several attempts are made by the syndicate to kill them but he manages to corner the boss and after a bloody gun battle Mike lands up in hospital. To make matters even worse the FBI and the captain of police also comes into the picture and starts to breath down his neck.
Mike's shooting activities comes to the attention of another crime syndicate and after the chief of this mob is blackmailed for murder by someone he decides that Mike has become a danger to his operation and he sets a trap to get him arrested for murder. Landing up in jail a long and intricate court case follows. Mike's situation in court starts to deteriorate when the jury learns about the gruesome way that some of the men died that tangled with him. At the last minute Jackie comes to his rescue with a clever solution and Mike is set free.
Shortly after this, an attempt by a professional hit man is made to kill Mike in his apartment. Mike is in a vicious frame of mind and he goes after a suspect to settle things once and for all. Luck is on his side because after the head of the syndicate and two of his key men perish, Mike has only one more person to deal with. This turns out to be a policeman who sold classified police information to the crime syndicate. Mike's last assignment is to search for stolen jewelry and a gun and when he goes to the airport to say goodbye to the blonde who decided to leave Los Angeles for good he finally catches up with this policeman and the stolen goods are recovered.
After all the dust settles Mike and Jackie have some time together discussing their future. Jackie wants to become a lawyer and she accepts employment at a law firm. Mike considers moving to a more respectful area in town in order to pick up better assignments and avoid skirmishes and gunfights in the future. In the next book of the series it becomes apparent how wrong he was.
