In 1944, World War II is brought close to home for the residents of northern Maine when German POWs are sent to work in the potato fields and lumber camps. Nine-year-old Clare befriends one of the prisoners who works on her father's farm. Already familiar with the Swedish and French-Canadian traditions of her family and neighbors, Clare is fascinated by the Christmas customs Peter describes, and she decides to bring at least one familiar holiday gift to Peter and his fellow POWs.
