This is a critical edition of "Years Are So Long". The novel is the first to examine the relationship between adult children and their elderly parents in Depression-era America. Published in 1934, Josephine Lawrence's novel "Years Are So Long", a Book-of-the-Month Club alternate selection in 1935, focuses on the plight of Barkley and Lucy Cooper and their five grown children, on whose support they blithely planned to rely as they face destitute old age. Struggling to support their own households, none of their children can house both parents indefinitely; the elder Coopers must separate for the first time in their fifty-year marriage, staying in each child's household for just three months at a time. "Years Are So Long" presents the difficulties of both parents and grown children with equal dispassion, judging neither parents nor children as they cope with painful circumstances. Yet without alluding to contemporary debates on the care of the elderly, "Years Are So Long" makes the terms of that debate painfully vivid for the reader.
