This report compares and contrasts the general features of vented (flooded) and valve regulated (sealed) lead-acid and nickel-cadmium batteries. The electrochemistry of these batteries is discussed with regard to the practical implications for design, choice of materials, the overall cost of batteries and manufacturing procedures. The use of valve regulated design is examined in relation to producing low maintenance free batteries. The relative performances of lead-acid and nickel-cadmium batteries are compared, and an evaluation is made of their strengths and weaknesses. Special attention is paid to batteries marketed for stationary and standby applications and their relative performance in specific sectors of this market. Growth areas of nickel-cadmium power sources are highlighted. The report results from a review carried out for Saft Industrial Batteries.
