Waterstones Says

Sharp, menacing and darkly funny, this first novel from Nigerian author Oyinkan Braithwaite is a breath of fresh air. Not just an inventive take on the serial-murder thriller, the novel is also a tender examination of sibling relationships in an oppressively patriarchal society; a story that turns the tables on the woman-as-victim trope. An addictive - and hugely satisfying - read.

Our Thriller of the Month for October 2019

Longlisted for the Booker Prize 2019

Shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2019

As smart and murderous as Killing Eve, My Sister, the Serial Killer is a blackly comic novel about how blood is thicker - and more difficult to get out of the carpet - than water...

When Korede's dinner is interrupted one night by a distress call from her sister, Ayoola, she knows what's expected of her: bleach, rubber gloves, nerves of steel and a strong stomach. This'll be the third boyfriend Ayoola's dispatched in "self-defence" and the third mess that her lethal little sibling has left Korede to clear away. She should probably go to the police for the good of the menfolk of Nigeria, but she loves her sister and, as they say, family always comes first. Until, that is, Ayoola starts dating the doctor where Korede works as a nurse. Korede's long been in love with him, and isn't prepared to see him wind up with a knife in his back: but to save one would mean sacrificing the other...

'...glittering noirish comedy set in vividly evoked Lagos' - The Daily Mail

'This riveting, brutally hilarious, ultra-dark novel is an explosive debut by Oyinkan Braithwaite... A delicious tale.' - Nylon

'Delightfully naughty... A taut and darkly funny contemporary noir that moves at lightning speed, it's the wittiest and most fun murder party you've ever been invited to.' - Samantha Irby, Marie Claire

'Pulpy, peppery and sinister... This scorpion-tailed little thriller leaves a response, and a sting, you will remember.' - The New York Times

'A gem: small, hard, sharp, and polished to perfection.' - Edgar Cantero, New York Times-bestselling author of Meddling Kids

'Sly, risky, and filled with surprises, Oyinkan Braithwaite holds nothing back in this wry and refreshingly inventive novel about violence, sister rivalries and simply staying alive.' - Idra Novey, author of Ways to Disappear

'I'm loving My Sister, the Serial Killer... Lethally elegant.' - Luke Jennings, author of Killing Eve: Codename Villanelle

'Bursting with chutzpah and laced with deadpan wit, My Sister The Serial Killer breezes in, knocks you sideways and waves goodbye with a killer smile. And like all deadly entertainments, it whets the appetite for more.' - Liz Jensen, author of The Ninth Life of Louis Drax

'You can't help flying through the pages, drawn in by the energy simmering right under the surface of the story, waiting for it to burst.' - Buzzfeed

'Braithwaite's blazing debut is as sharp as a knife...bitingly funny and brilliantly executed, with not a single word out of place.' Publishers Weekly

'Who is more dangerous? A femme fatale murderess or the quiet, plain woman who cleans up her messes? I never knew what was going to happen, but found myself pulling for both sisters, as I relished the creepiness and humor of this modern noir.' - Helen Ellis, author of American Housewife

'Braithwaite's debut is written in quick, economical chapters that brilliantly render the setting...A darkly, darkly funny novel... It strips away the romanticism of the complicated sisterly relationship but perfectly illustrates its complicated contradictions.' - Booklist

'Even your most extravagant speculations about what's really going on with these wildly contrasting yet oddly simpatico siblings will be trumped in this skillful, sardonic debut.' - Kirkus Review

'This slim, scathingly black comedy delves into two sisters' tenuous dynamic - heightened since one of them is, erm, a serial killer. Such morbidity only sharpens the book's comic edge, which emerges via Braithwaite's deadpan prose.' - Entertainment Weekly

'Strange, funny and oddly touching... Pretty much perfect.' - LitHub

'Braithwaite's blazing debut is as sharp as a knife...bitingly funny and brilliantly executed, with not a single word out of place.' - Publishers Weekly

I love the packaging of this book sent to me by the publisher. It had a pair of bright green marigolds attached to it. After reading the book, I can understand why you need a pair....

Clever, funny, sassy; the story... More

“Dark and Brilliant”

I enjoyed this so much: absolutely compulsive reading that verges on the hysterical when it comes to our narrators' series of unsettling events.
Mostly it's a tale of sisterhood in dark circumstances but... More

“Brilliant”

Great read. Really liked the first impression and can't wait to read the rest. It is right up my street and can't wait to sit down and read the rest.
