Bringing Wodehouse to a new generation

Alongside the publication this week of a brand new Jeeves and Wooster novel, Jeeves And The Wedding Bells, written as an homage to P.G. Wodehouse by Sebastian Faulks, the entire back-list has been given a new look. Jacket designer Natascha Nel tells us how she approached the job, and shares some of her favourites...

Reinventing the cover designs for eight titles in the P.G. Wodehouse back-list was a challenging brief for David (boldandnoble.com) and I in that our designs needed to speak to a new generation of potential Wodehouse readers who might associate Jeeves with the search engine rather than with the "gentleman's personal gentleman". At the same time, our designs needed to be a nod to all things deco, and to pay homage to the huge number of existing Wodehouse fans out there.

We've tried to achieve this through a combination of fluorescent inks, acid brights and patterns and illustrations that were inspired by the world of Wodehouse and the roaring twenties. We've also given pride of place to the wonderful endorsements of ardent Wodehouse fans – from Marian Keyes to David Walliams. Pip, pip!
