Susan Cooper

Susan Cooper is a British author of children’s and young adult fantasy, best known for her pioneering The Dark is Rising Sequence. After working as a reporter for The Sunday Times, Cooper emigrated to the United States in 1963 to marry a professor of metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While living in America, Cooper channelled evocative memories of the English and Welsh landscapes of her childhood into a five volume low-fantasy sequence called The Dark is Rising.

Full Biography

The opening book of the sequence, 1965’s Over Sea Under Stone, was originally inspired by a competition to create a story in the vein of E. Nesbit, although Cooper did not end up submitting the work for that purpose. The Dark is Rising, the second book in the sequence, was published in 1973 and, with its reliance on folklore, fantasy imagery and myth, represented a radical departure from the more conventional adventure yarn of its predecessor. Regarded as a pivotal piece of children’s fantasy literature, The Dark is Rising spawned three further sequels – Greenwitch, The Grey King and Silver on the Tree – and has inspired an entire sub-culture of devoted fans. In addition to her best known series, Cooper has penned the Boggart stories for younger readers as well as several historical children’s novels such as Ghost Hawk and Victory.
