After studying Drama at Exeter University, Hillyard went into music journalism where she spent a decade writing for institutions like the NME and the BBC. Her debut picture book Mabel and the Mountain – about a fly with a determination to climb a mountain - was published in 2020 and won the Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Prize. Ned and the Great Garden Hamster Race followed in 2021 whilst the following year’s Gretel the Wonder Mammoth - which detailed an anxious woolly mammoth’s struggles to open up to her friends - was shortlisted for the 2023 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize. Hillyard’s fourth picture book, Flora and Nora Hunt for Treasure, was published in 2023.
