Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, author Khaled Hosseini lived in Afghanistan and then Paris before his family was forced to seek political asylum in the United States in the wake of the Soviet-Afghan war. Hosseini wrote his first novel, The Kite Runner, whilst practising medicine and the book went on to become one of the most successful debuts in publishing history, establishing Hosseini as one of his generation’s most successful and acclaimed writers. Hosseini followed the novel with A Thousand Splendid Suns and And the Mountains Echoed. To date, his works have been published in over 70 countries and sold over 40 million copies worldwide.
A long-term Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in 2018 Hosseini published Sea Prayer, a story inspired by the suffering of those escaping the Syrian conflict. Dedicated to refugees around the world, the author has given over all the author proceeds from the book to fund UNHCR and his own charity The Khaled Hosseini Foundation.
