Before setting sail as a bestselling author and illustrator, Jonny Duddle worked variously as an encyclopaedia salesman, a children’s entertainer in Majorca and an art teacher in the small village of Kang in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. His first encounters with all things piratical came with his debut picture book The Pirate Cruncher and he followed that up with work helping to design the characters for the hit Aardman’s stop-motion film The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!
His second picture book, The Pirates Next Door, won the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize in 2012 and became the first in a series of nautical adventures which now also includes The Pirates of Scurvy Sands. His other works include the Jolley-Rogers series, Gigantosaurus and The King of Space.
As well as writing and illustrating his own work, Jonny Duddle has also collaborated to illustrate other books, including designing a new set of covers for the Harry Potter series.
