Dorothy L. Sayers

Dorothy L. Sayers was an English crime writer, poet and essayist, as well as the creator of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. The first Lord Peter Wimsey novel, Whose Body?, appeared in 1923 and seven years later the aristocratic sleuth was provided with love interest and sparring partner Harriet Vane, in Strong Poison. One of the queens of the inter-war Golden Age of Crime, Sayers work confronted moral and ethical issues and was written in a more self-consciously literary style than her contemporaries. Consequently she has received more acclaim than many crime writers of the period, with The Nine Tailors and Gaudy Night considered some of her finest works. In addition to ‘whodunnits,’ Sayers also wrote poetry and, as a devout lifelong Christian, a number of volumes of religious essays.
