Cressida Cowell

Cressida Cowell’s reputation as one of the most spellbinding children’s authors around was confirmed by her richly deserved appointment as Waterstones Children’s Laureate for 2019-2022. Both of her fantasy series, How to Train Your Dragon and The Wizards of Once, combine high adventure with an abundance of quirky humour and a big heart, and have become staples of children’s bookshelves the world over.

Delivering intelligence and adventure in equal doses, Cressida Cowell’s peerless How to Train Your Dragon series debuted in 2001 with the eponymous How to Train Your Dragon, growing to a collection of 12 books that reached a conclusion in 2015 with How to Fight a Dragon's Fury.  Combining Cowell’s skill as an illustrator and her unique prowess as a storyteller, these adventures of Vikings and their flying reptilian steeds are the perfect balance of humour, proper pathos and wild excitement. We love them.

Cressida Cowell initially cut her teeth as a writer and illustrator of picture books, a format she occasionally returns to (notably in her Emily Brown collaborations with artist Neal Layton, beginning in 2007 with Emily Brown and the Thing). Following the success of the How to Train Your Dragon series (also ably adapted by the Dreamworks animation team), in 2017 Cowell subsequently kicked off a new sequence of tales, The Wizards of Once

How to Train Your Dragon Series

Inspired both by idyllic childhood memories of holidaying on a remote Scottish isle and her experiences as a young mother, over twelve volumes Cressida Cowell’s How to Train Your Dragon series follows the growing legend of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, son of the fearsome Stoick the Vast. Slight in build and thoughtful by nature, Hiccup inspires little obvious promise as a Viking warrior. However, fate, courage and a certain toothless dragon is about to change all that…
