Chris Wormell
Chris Wormell is a British author/illustrator, as well as an accomplished artist and printmaker. Wormell had no formal artistic training, instead ploughing his way through a series of jobs as a road-sweeper, refuse collector and postman, until he developed an interest in wood engraving in the early 1980s. His first published picture books bore the influence of his wood and lino-cut work and it is a technique that he has returned to periodically in later books. From the start of the 21st century Wormell adapted his style to create more expansive landscapes in works such as The Wild Girl, The Sea Monster and the George and the Dragon books. In addition to his own writing, Wormell has provided illustrations for other authors, including Tim Winton and Philip Pullman’s Book of Dust series. Wormell’s latest work is The Magic Place, his first novel for older readers.
The debut children’s novel from the illustrator of Philip Pullman’s Book of Dust sequence, The Magic Place is a timeless fable about breaking free from the dark and embracing a bewitching new world of possibility. A beautiful story rippling with wonder and hope, The Magic Place marks Wormell out as an author to watch.
