Charlie Mackesy

Born in Northumberland, Mackesy briefly attended two separate universities but left after a week on both occasions. His artistic career began with a position as cartoonist on The Spectator, from where he went on to illustrate books for Oxford University Press. His work has graced not only books, galleries and magazine covers but also churches, schoolrooms, prisons and women’s safe houses, whilst his charitable work spans a honey social enterprise in Zambia, a homeless project in London and lithographic work for Nelson Mandela’s Unity series project.

In 2019 he produced The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, a stunningly illustrated and deeply moving story of love and understanding featuring the four eponymous characters. The book found an enormous global audience who identified with its heartfelt message, going on to be translated into forty different languages and dialects and named both Waterstones Book of the Year and Barnes & Noble Book of the Year. Mackesy co-wrote and co-directed the acclaimed 2022 television adaptation for which an accompanying book about the making of the film was published.
