Born in Scotland, Charles Cumming was educated at Eton and studied English Literature at the University of Edinburgh. Soon after graduating, he was approached for recruitment by MI6 – an experience which sparked an undying interest in the world of espionage and inspired his first novel A Spy By Nature (2001). It features MI5 agent Alec Milius who reappears in The Spanish Game (2006), praised by the Times as ‘one of the six finest spy novels of all time’.
Cumming’s 2016 thriller A Foreign Country – the first in his Thomas Kell series – examines the disappearance of the first female head of MI6; it was followed by the award-winning A Colder War (2014) and A Divided Spy (2016). Opening in 2020 with Box 88, Cumming’s third series centres around the titular top secret intelligence agency, into whose covert world Judas 62 (2021) returns.
