Biography and Series Information

Born to American parents in Tehran, much of Cassandra’s Clare’s early life was spent travelling the world, experiences which later inspired her vivid and absorbing fantasy writing.

The World of the Shadowhunters

Clare wrote her first novel, City of Bones, in 2004 the book went on to become the first in the phenomenally successful Mortal Instruments series. The series tells the story of characters wrapped up in the world of the Shadowhunters (or Nephalim), half-angels who guard the world from demons on behalf of the Angel Raziel.

Cassandra Clare’s extraordinary world now encompasses three novel series, two short-story collections and four graphic novels as well as having inspired both a film and a popular television series. The book series include the original six-volume Mortal Instruments series (In reading order: City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls and City of Heavenly Fire). Clare followed this up with The Infernal Devices series (a prequel trilogy set in Victorian England: Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince and Clockwork Princess) and The Dark Artifices Trilogy which includes Lady Midnight and Lord of Shadows.

Clare has added to the series with various standalone novels and short stories, expanding the world of the Shadowhunters: The Bane Chronicles and Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy. She has announced that she will conclude the overarching series with two further trilogies: The Last Hours and The Wicked Powers.

The Magesterium Series

Additionally, Cassandra Clare has teamed up with fellow fantasy author Holly Black to write the Magesterium Series set in an underground school where mages train apprentices to control the elements. Originally designed as a five-book series the sequence so far includes The Iron Trial, The Copper Gauntlet and The Bronze Key with The Silver Mask due for publication in October 2017.
