Carlos Ruiz Zafón
Often claimed to be the most-read Spanish author since Cervantes, novelist Carlos Ruiz Zafón is one of the world’s bestselling living authors, his books having sold more than 38 million copies worldwide. Zafón worked in advertising before publishing his first novel, The Prince of Mist.
He is best-known for the internationally acclaimed novel The Shadow of the Wind, the first book in a four-novel cycle collectively called The Cemetery of Forgotten Books. Set in Barcelona with a labyrinthine, Chinese-box narrative of interlocking stories and mysteries the series has become a global phenomenon, with Barcelona tourist guides offering walking tours around the novels’ key locations. The second two novels in the series are The Angel’s Game and The Prisoner of Heaven and the final novel in the quartet, The Labyrinth of Spirits, is published in English in 2018.
In the heart of Barcelona's winding alleyways, Daniel Sempere runs the Sempere & Sons bookshop - a place of refuge for booklovers and wandering souls. Married and with a young son, Daniel is still haunted by the strange rumours surrounding his mother's death. One night, he dreams he is standing in The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a secret library of forgotten titles known only by a few. There he finds a white coffin containing the body of his mother. As he reaches towards her, she utters the words 'You must tell the truth, Daniel.'
An electrifying story of passion, intrigue and adventure, The Labyrinth of Spirits is a Russian doll of a novel, of plots within plots, where even the shadows have a story to tell.
