Amitav Ghosh
Known for his expansive works of fiction and non-fiction, tackling recurrent themes of diaspora, identity and the legacy of colonialism for Indian and South Asian people, Amitav Ghosh is a celebrated contemporary writer and thinker. Born in Calcutta and educated in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom, Amitav Ghosh published his first novel, The Circle of Reason, in 1986. The novel achieved widespread critical acclaim winning the 1990 Prix Médicis Étranger.
He is also a prolific essayist and his works of non-fiction include In an Antique Land and The Great Derangement about the global threat of climate change.
The history of the nutmeg is one of conquest and exploitation - of both human life and the natural environment - and the origin of our contemporary climate crisis.
