Alasdair Gray

Hailed as a modern visionary on a par with William Blake by Ali Smith and credited with redirecting the tenor of Scottish Literature for a new generation and cementing the reputation of the publisher Canongate, author, playwright, illustrator and muralist Alasdair Gray was a shining light of the twentieth century.

Born in Riddrie, Glasgow Gray trained as a fine artist and worked as an art teacher before becoming a full time playwright and painter. His first novel, Lanark – a surrealist mix of fantasy and modernism observing the world through the eyes of art student Duncan Shaw – remains the masterpiece for which he is best remembered. Published in 1981, Lanark was nearly two decades in the making and won Scottish Arts Council Book Award and the Scottish Book of the Year award and earned comparisons with James Joyce’s Ulysses.

His later works often combined prose with painting and illustration and his bibliography includes 1982’s Janine (1984), Something Leather, Poor Things, which won both the Whitbread Novel Award and the Guardian Fiction Prize and Old Men In Love, as well as the collection Stories, Mostly.
