This 17 volume set, "LNCS 5610 - 5624 and LNAI 5638 - 5639", constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCII 2009 and affiliated conferences, held in San Diego, CA, USA, in July 2009. A total of 4,348 individuals from academia, research institutes, industry and governmental agencies from 73 countries submitted contributions to HCI International 2009, and 1,397 papers that were judged to be of high scientific quality were included in the program and in the 17 volume proceedings. These contributions thoroughly cover the entire field of human-computer interaction, addressing major advances in knowledge and the effective use of computers in a variety of application areas. The overall objective of the HCI International Conference series is to provide an international forum for the dissemination and exchange of up-to-date scientific information on theoretical, generic and applied areas of human-computer interaction, universal access, human centered design, engineering psychology, cognitive ergonomics, virtual reality, usability, internationalization, online communities, social computing, augmented cognition, and digital human modeling. Springer also produced, for exclusive distribution to conference participants, a DVD version of the HCII 2009 proceedings. This DVD was released with ISBN 978-3-642-02884-7 and included, in addition to the proceedings papers, the extended abstracts of the posters presented during the HCII 2009 conference.
