Bill Mason wakes up after an eye operation to an eerie silence and to discover that the rest of the world has been blinded by a strange meteorite shower. But worse - in the ensuing chaos triffids, walking, flesh-eating plants, genetically engineered for food source, have begun to break loose from their farms and are on the rampage, discovering their new-found ecological dominance. As survivors must adapt to try and shape a new future for themselves, we are reminded of the precarious balance of the world species order and the granted with which we take the security of advanced civilisation; how human folly can so easily tip that balance and how, with humanity, we may survive it.
