Synopsis
"Introducing Stylistics" is a lively and accessible introduction to textual analysis which emphasises practical exploration in developing descriptive and analytical concepts. Part I deals with methods, and develops the students' ability to describe and understand stylistic concepts; Part II discusses a wide range of texts to apply and develop these methods; Part III provides material and suggestions for work on inter-textual comparisons. The texts used are drawn from a wide range of sources: the comic strip, the recipe, conversation, song lyrics and the television advertisement, as well as literary fiction. Each chapter has extensive exercises designed to reinforce and develop students' understanding at their own level and the author encourages students to experiment and explore, by rewriting the texts he provides.
