UK Kirkus review

Scott, a Pulitzer Prize finalist for her novel The Manikin, has written an enchanting often disturbing novel centered around a three-year-old boy, Bo. Bo is orphaned after his father's death in a hit and run and his mother's death in a car accident, and he becomes the focus of a custody battle between his two sets of grandparents. Scott magically weaves the world and imagination of a three-year-old's mind eye, placing his focused, intense imaginings, his dreams of his lost mother and of belonging, amid an adult world that is full of disappointment, resentment, strained relationships and dangerous desires. Make Believe taps into the depths of the imagination with which a child constructs reality, his world, his identity, his morals and beliefs, as it effortlessly moves from the point of view of the adults surrounding Bo, to Bo's own vulnerable and developing self. Scott's writing is beautiful, inventive yet subtle, filled with tragedy but brimming with humour; she captures the mysterious, often profound inner world of her characters, while placing their feet firmly on the ground, finding their way in an all too human world. This is an insightful and wonderful read. (Kirkus UK)
