Synopsis
Set in the 17th century, "Sexing the Cherry" celebrates the power of the imagination as it playfully juggles with our perception of history and reality. This is the story of Jordan, an orphan found floating on the River Thames, and his keeper, The Dog Woman, a huge and monstrous creature with a powerful right hook and a wide vocabulary. It is a story about love and sex; lies and truths; and, twelve dancing princesses who lived happily ever after, but not with their husbands.

UK Kirkus review
Without labouring the magic realism, Winterson creates the most compelling of stories. It is a fairy tale with rough, raw and often funny detail, the tale of the Dog Woman and the boy she finds as a baby in the River Thames. This discovery gives her the only opportunity she ever has to grow to love someone - and for him to love her back - regardless of her physical imperfections. And the boy, Jordan, goes on to achieve what she could never do - find social favour, even bringing the first pineapple into England to the court of Charles II. (Kirkus UK)
