Synopsis
This dazzling overview of a turbulent century explores both dramatic events and underlying trends. Despite a terrible two-stage 'European civil war' and the traumatic rise and fall of communism, wealth has increased dramatically alongside a four-fold leap in population, women's lives have been transformed, America has assumed undisputed political and cultural leadership. "The Penguin History of the Twentieth Century" is powerful, international and definitive.

A book that deserves the widest reading. ("The New York Times Book Review")
UK Kirkus review
This is a piece of proper world history, covering belief and unbelief; trends in population, culture, business and society; political frameworks, from absolute monarchs and dictators to anarchists and proportional representation; and of course warfare. Although born a European, Roberts can perceive the 20th century marked the end of Europe's predominance in world affairs. He is far too good a historian to prophesy; save that he concludes; 'self-destruction of the human species seems improbable because the human being is a reflective, as well as a tool-making, animal.' Distilled wisdom makes magnificent reading. Review by M R D FOOT (Kirkus UK)
