Synopsis

This book contains two wonderful stories about members of the Glass family by the author of "The Catcher in the Rye". The first story takes place in downtown New Haven during the weekend of 'the Yale game' and follows Franny Glass on a date with her collegiate boyfriend. The second focuses on Zooey Glass, a somewhat emotionally toughened genius. As his younger sister Franny hits an emotional crisis in her parents' Manhattan living room, Zooey comes to her aid, offering love, understanding, and words of sage advice.

Publisher and industry reviews

UK Kirkus review

Salinger is often thought of as a one-book writer, perhaps because that book, The Catcher in the Rye, is so good. But Salinger also wrote some excellent short stories and my favourite, Franny, forms half of this slim volume. The central male character, Ivy League student Lane Coutell, is a typical Salinger creation. Lane is obsessed with his own cleverness, callow and insensitive. Reading his comments about Flaubert's 'lack of testicularity' always leaves me unsure whether to giggle, or wince in recognition of my awful teenage self. Review by Harry Pearson, whose books include 'A Tall Man in a Low Land' (Kirkus UK)
