Synopsis
The behaviour of solids is critical to the operation of sewerage systems. Substantial research into all aspects of sewer solids has advanced to the point where the operational effects and environmental impacts of these solids are now well appreciated. Ideas are emerging which offer to improve the performance of traditional systems and develop new "sustainable" and low-cost strategies. The 35 papers selected for these proceedings contain work on drainage inputs, including gross solids, and their interaction with sewer "sediments"; modelling studies (approaches used include computational fluid dynamics and neural networks) for quantitative and qualitative aspects of sewer flow; the design and operation of sewers and separation devices; and measurement techniques for flow velocity and settling characteristics. They highlight the significant advances in understanding tools and techniques in the last half-decade or so, and provide pointers to the future of sewerage and municipal waste disposal systems.
