Synopsis
Just another day in downtown Washington DC? Private Investigator Derek Strange and his partner, Terry Quinn, run a PI business in the seedy underbelly of Washington DC. Strange and Quinn are approached by a young man asking them to find his girlfriend who has gone missing. And so Strange and Quinn find her. Just another day? Not quite. In the grimy underworld inhabited by Strange, nothing is that simple. For Strange and Quinn's efforts have led to a young mother being brutally murdered - a devastating discovery that causes them both to question the morality by which they live. And yet at the same time they need to continue the search for another missing girl, a teenage runaway who shows up in a porn video. And who hasn't been seen since. Bleak, gritty and moving, "Soul Circus" superbly brings to life the devastating story of life and death in Washington's black ghettoes.

NATIONAL UK AUTHOR TOUR - CANCELLED DUE TO SNOW IN WASHINGTON Following 2 feet of snow poor George spent 9 hours on the runway at Washington airport waiting to fly over for his tour, then a chilly day and a half at an aiport hotelbefore we decided to cancel his tour. The bookshops who had events have beenvery understanding and George will be signing bookplates for them and their customers. The shops had done a great job too: OTTKARS in Clapham had taken 80 reservations and WATERSTONE'S in Manchester and Leeds had about 50 reservations each. The good news is his ticket is fully refundable and we only lost a50 deposit for the launch party. In total, cancelling his our at such short notice is only going to cost us about 350/400. The even BETTER news is that George was able to do the following interviews from Washington:Radio 4's FRONTROW on Friday 21 February, Radio 5's SIMON MAYO Show on Thursday 20 February;plus interviews for PUBLISHING NEWS (2,000 word interview), BOOKS magazine, WORD magazine, CRIME TIME, SHOTS, MOJO magazine and LEEDS GUIDE. It's hard to ask for more than that.' THE MIRROR 'Reading them (Pelecanos' novels) makes you realise how contemporary novels are obsessed withthe concerns of the middle class and how the poor have been marginalised andreduced to cliche...He writes with insight and anger about why young men aredrawn into gangs and violent crime..Pelecanos understands the lure of violence, the need for action. Soul Circus packs a powerful anti-gun message but hecan still communicate the thrill of holding a weapon in your hand'Simon Hinde, THE EXPRESS 5-Star review Don't Miss 'Soul Circus is Pelecanos' 11th novelin as many years - a teeming, brilliant book that confirms what long-term fans and Uncut regulars will already know - namely, that on this form, George Pis just about unbeatable, one of the most distinctive voices in contemporarycrime fiction, and a great writer in any genre.' UNCUT magazine 'The 12th novel by George P Pelecanos firmly establishes him as a prince of crime writerswho may one day become king...' Amy Raphel ESQUIRE 'Pelecanos has an mean ear for dialogue and a way of propelling the action through speech that's reminiscent of George V Higgins. His exploration of conflicting moral dilemmas, coupled with a refusal to make his villains all bad and his heroes all good, makes Pelecanos one of America's finest contemporary writers. TIME OUT 12/3/03 'This is Pelecanos's most outspoken, angry and political novel so far. At thesame time, it's a fast-paced, compellin detective story.' UK Kirkus review
Set in the poorest quarter of America's capital city, this thriller from acclaimed novelist Pelecanos focuses on Derek Strange, the man behind the aptly named Strange Investigations. Much to Derek's distaste and against his better judgement, his latest case, if successful, would mean getting someone he hates a reprieve from the death sentence. As he and his equally hard-bitten but very human colleagues continue their search for a young girl, the action switches back and forth across a convincing cast of characters who live in and off the mean and unforgiving streets. No-nonsense dialogue combines with taut narrative to reveal the realities of gang life and expose the hypocrisy of thugs for whom the ideas of revolution and 'rising up' invariably involve guns, drugs and flash vulgarity. The different generations and ethnic backgrounds view each other distrustfully through dismissive remarks about appearance and the music they choose to soundtrack their daily existence. A fug of super-strong marijuana hangs low over the revving of powerful engines, as youthful gang members with a depressingly short life expectancy desperately try to impress their leaders and their peers with macho posturings. These gangs and these streets are home, though, the only alternative to a decrepit room decorated with a mirror hanging from a nail in a bullet hole. And the lifestyle provides them with an almost touching loyalty to each other, a tiny bit of belonging in a world where carrying a gun and not being afraid to use it is the mark of a real man. Definitely not an easy read, and peppered with expletives, there's a relentless, hard-edged grimness permeating this highly effective crime thriller, which offers little by way of redemption or respite from its opening encounter under the harsh lighting of a Washington jail interview room to the compelling finale.
