Synopsis

'You have already been a punk. Least you can do is go out like a man'; then a dull popping sound and a quiet splash. That's how Nick Stefanos gets drawn into the murder of Calvin Jeter, an investigation that takes him through the roughest part of the nation's capital and the blackest parts of the human soul. "Down by the River Where the Dead Men Go" is the third volume in the "Nick Stefanos" series - which establishes George P. Pelecanos as the rightful heir to the noir tradition of James Cain, David Goodis and Jim Thompson.

UK Kirkus review

Pelecanos is a crime writing star. His novels of blacks and whites co-existing on the streets of Washington DC over the past three decades defy criticism. Nick's Trip, A Firing Offense and Down By the River Where the Dead Men Go feature his serial hero Nick Stafanos, who graduates from being a Hi-Fi salesman to a private detective as he keeps getting involved in nefarious doings around the city and decides that if he's going to be in trouble he may as well get paid for it. The Sweet Forever is set in the mid-80s and Washington is being ripped apart by the drug trade and it seems that only one man, Vietnam veteran Marcus Clay, owner of a chain of black record shops, his employees and two crooked cops are prepared to make a stand. Look out for a cameo from a youthful Stefanos too. These books are tough, streetwise, hip, cool, with a soundtrack of classic soul and rock. What more do you need to know? (Kirkus UK)
