The fifth volume of his sensational memoirs

What caused the Indian Mutiny - the insurrection which was the watershed of the British Empire? Flashman, in his role as secret agent, saw far more of the Great Mutiny than he wanted to - Russian spies in Queen Victoria's drawing-room, the first explosion of revolt, the heroic defence at Cawnpore and the vital message out of Lucknow...

George MacDonald Fraser served in a Highland regiment in India and the Middle East before working on newspapers in Britain and Canada. He has written many Flashman novels and numerous film screenplays, including the James Bond film Octopussy.

Timothy West, CBE, has had a long and distinguished career on stage, appearing in the Royal National Theatre's acclaimed production of King Lear, as Falstaff in both parts of Henry IV, and on tour in The Birthday Party, The Master Builder and The External. On TV, he has been in Bleak House, New Tricks, Bedtime, Waking the Dead and Colditz, while his films include Cry Freedom, Ever After and Joan of Arc
